Van Halen Baby!! New album, tour coming soon

Donning what can only be described as ‘outrigger chic’ overalls and cap, David Lee Roth and the other members of the reformed Van Halen– brothers Eddie and Alex, plus Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass–took to the stage in a small NYC club last night to announce their 2012 tour.

The supergroup performed at Roth’s uncle’s Cafe Wha? in New York’s West Village to an intimate and oh so lucky crowd, which included several notable celebs, like Bob Dylan and John McEnroe. Roth joked with the crowd, “I’m more nervous about this gig than I would ever be in the Garden,” and “The last time I stood on a stage this low, I had to get the car home by midnight.”

Van Halen used this opportunity to announce their upcoming 2012 and promote their forthcoming new studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, due out February 7. The tour kicks off on February 16 from Louisville, Ky., and will be stopping in major markets like Philadelphia, Boston, DC, and Atlanta– see the full tour schedule on the band’s official site, Van-Halen.com.

This gig was clearly the warm up to get the momentum rolling for the new tour and new material, but the boys played an hour-long set of mainly fan favorites, including “You Really Got Me,” “Jump” and “Hot For Teacher.” One could argue the momentum really started  after Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, but the excitement is growing even more in anticipation of this tour and new music.

Van Halen’s guitar takes spotlight in Smithsonian

It’s really no surprise when guitar legend Eddie Van Halen wins another award, but it seems that now his success is rubbing off on his belongings.

The guitar that Van Halen played with during the band’s 2007-08 tour with David Lee Roth will soon get its own spotlight at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

The red, white and blue guitar named ‘Frank 2’ is an exact replica of the famous ‘Frankenstein’ guitar that Van Halen played with for more than 30 years. After its retirement in 2006, Van Halen switched over to ‘Frank 2.’

New Album Coming Soon, Video Game Awards

Word on the street has it that Van Halen is in the finishing stages of a new record!?  Several websites quoted from a “trusted source,” but I’m skeptical of the validity of this statement.

In other Van Halen news, they have been nominated for a Golden Joystick Award in the Music Game of the Year for their Guitar Hero: Van Halen game!

They will be facing off against:

Guitar Hero: Metallica
The Beatles Rock Band
DJ Hero
Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits
Guitar Hero 5
Guitar Hero Greatest Hits
Band Hero
Just Dance
Lego Rock Band (Read More…)

On Van Halen’s Website, you can check out the earliest circulated recording of Eddie Van Halen playing guitar.

The rocker, who recorded this at his parent’s house in 1974 at the age of 19, can be heard working on some riffs – including “Somebody Get me a Doctor”.

In the most unlikely of news venue, Ticketmaster Entertainment CEO Irving Azoff let is slip that Van Halen will be hitting the road in 2010.

Azoff was presenting a Q&A session at a Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference when a miscommunication prompted the announcement unintentionally. However, no further information was revealed about the specifics of when or where or with who.

Eddie Van Halen Remembers Michael Jackson

Eddie Van Halen is just one of countless celebrities stunned by the news of Michael Jackson’s sudden death by cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009. Like so many artists of all musical genres, Eddie reacted by recounting an instance of how Michael touched his life.

The media reported Eddie’s response, “I am really shocked; as I’m sure the world is, to hear the news. I had the pleasure of working with Michael on ‘Beat It’ back in ‘83 — one of my fondest memories in my career. Michael will be missed and may he rest in peace.”

Gone, but not for good

Though they’re not scheduled for tour anytime soon, Van Halen has denied any rumors that their June 2, 2008 concert was their last concert.

“I’ll be making music ’til the day I die. I’ve done all kinds of stuff, and more is coming. I can’t tell you exactly when right now. Wolfgang is in the 12th grade and he needs to graduate first. Then I’m getting married in June. We’ll pick it up after that,” Eddie Van Halen said.

Van Halen joins car auction

Eddie Van Halen recently auctioned two 1956 Chevy Classics complete with custom, theme-matching guitars with each vehicle.

The cars were auctioned at the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, from January 11-18 with NO RESERVE!

“Rock ‘n’ roll and collector cars go hand in hand,” said President of Barrett-Jackson Steve Davis. “And Eddie’s cars, although from the same year, represent the diversity of the collector car hobby. The Nomad is restored to original specifications while the 210 is a custom built street rod with modern performance gear. I expect these cars to enter special collections that salute both rock ‘n’ roll and automobiles.”

EVH Wolfgang coming soon

For the past two years, Eddie Van Halen has been extensively testing the new EVH Wolfgang electric guitar. Now, it’s finally ready.

Starting January 2009, you can pick up your very own EVH guitar worldwide.

“A guitar is a very personal extension of the person playing it. You have to be emotionally and spiritually connected to your instrument. I could have just stayed at home and built this guitar for myself. I do this because a lot of people ask if they can get what I use. Well, yes you can and what you get is identical to what I use,” Van Halen said. “From the basics of the guitar to painstaking aspects like the binding and everything else-we re-did everything on this guitar.”
